This new elementary school replaces two existing schools in the Southern Lehigh School District. The new 58,500 sq. ft. building is slated for LEED Gold certification and houses 500 students in grades K-3. A highlight is its flexibility and accommodation of collaborative learning. This is best exemplified by two different collaboration zones, both containing a number of small group instruction rooms with movable partitions that can be easily reconfigured in multiple arrangements into larger group spaces. Another notable feature is the prominent location of the gym, cafeteria, and library in close proximity to the main entrance to enable secure after-hours use by the community. A number of sustainable strategies have been instituted and will contribute to the LEED Gold certification including a geothermal HVAC system and LED lighting.
