New Construction Linked to Existing Municipal Building
This initiative featured the relocation of the Newtown Public Library from cramped quarters in a commercial strip to the township municipal campus. Two alternative approaches were explored – a freestanding building or expansion of the existing municipal building; the latter of which was ultimately chosen. The primary project challenge was to accommodate a new 10,000 sq. ft. addition on a sloped, constricted patch of lawn adjacent to the existing building. The result is a bright, lively new home for the library that features expansive natural light and a mix of warm and inviting building materials. A notable feature is an enclosed landscaped patio that offers an outdoor reading area for patrons. Situated in front of the municipal building, the new library melds with the existing architectural character while establishing a fresh and contemporary new image for the complex.
