New Construction; Prototype Design Constructed on Two Sites

Roberts Elementary School is one of three new elementary schools designed by KCBA as part of a total renewal of this district’s elementary facilities. In light of the district’s tradition of offering small-scale, neighborhood-style environments to elementary learners, capacity of the new school was limited to 350 students and the design approach focused on establishing an inviting, residential character for the building. Constructed on a tight 9.9 acre site that also housed the previous school, the new facility is sensitive to an adjacent historic one-room schoolhouse and nature preserve, both of which are utilized for special functions and programs. The new 52,000 sq. ft. school is organized along a simple circulation pattern that links a series of distinct grade-level classroom wings with centrally located community functions such as the library, gymnasium, and cafeteria.
