Adaptive Reuse of a Skating Rink to a Public Library

This project featured the renovation and conversion of an abandoned skating rink into a 23,000 sq. ft. community library. Without the constraints of a structural steel grid, KCBA had a great deal of flexibility to implement an open and inviting radial floor plan centered on the main circulation desk. This configuration aided in simplifying the operations and supervision of the facility as well as enabled a highly efficient arrangement of program areas. In collaboration with the owner, interior fixtures were implemented to facilitate retail display strategies to attract patrons and advertise the library’s offerings. Comfortable seating is provided in perimeter glass areas with views into planted beds and wooded surroundings.
